A challenging and exciting opportunity has become available for a HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) Manager to provide comprehensive oversight, planning, coordination, and management for SGM globally, including Hesper, NovaMarine and Ships Agency. JOB DESCRIPTION Reporting to the COO, the successful applicant will be responsible for the following key areas across all countries and businesses and should possess a resolute commitment to the safety and welfare of our people and our environment: Policy, implementation, certification and compliance
  • Develop, enhance and implement comprehensive HSE policies and procedures, tailored to the specific needs of SGM, with a strong focus on the engineering environment.
  • Execute and maintain HSE plans in accordance with legal guidelines, ensuring implementation and adherence across all business units, including relevant licences which may be required.
  • Assess risk, adherence and compliance with relevant legislation / policy through evaluations, audits, and assessments.
  • Stay abreast of relevant health and safety regulations and industry / customer standards.
  • Oversee, achieve and maintain all relevant certification / accreditation across countries and business units.
  • Responsible for business and divisional compliance and ensure completion of internal and process audits with no major findings.
  • Drive continuous improvement and ensure initiatives are implemented.
  • Manage Department of Labour Health and Safety inspections.
  • Understand the customer requirements in the technical business as it relates to safety and ensure the necessary protocols are in place and adhered to.
Risk management
  • Establish, maintain, improve and report on the company’s HSE risk management policies and documentation.
  • Coordinate with various business areas for the development of risk control processes, policies and procedures within each functional area.
  • Understand and adhere to relevant legislation and insurance requirements.
  • Conduct ongoing risk assessments to identify potential hazards and assess the level of risk.
  • Develop and implement strategies to mitigate identified risks.
  • Work closely with engineering teams to integrate safety considerations into project planning and execution.
Safety training and education
  • Develop and deliver training programs on a variety of safety topics.
  • Promote a safety culture through ongoing communication and awareness campaigns.
Incident management
  • Lead investigations into incidents and accidents, identifying root causes and implementing corrective and preventive actions.
  • Maintain accurate records of all incidents and near misses.
  • Develop and implement incident response and update / review emergency evacuation plans.
Safety performance monitoring
  • Establish Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for safety and monitor performance against these metrics.
  • Analyse data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Prepare and present regular safety reports to management.
  • Ensure contractor management and guidelines are in place.
Collaboration and communication
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, marine procurement and ships agency, to integrate safety into daily operations.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of the organisation to foster a strong safety culture.
  • Lead all safety workshops and meetings.
  • Compile annual projected HSE budgets and manage them effectively.
  • Continuous engagement with Grindrod to ensure alignment with policies and initiatives. This includes all Group reporting requirements and deadlines.
  • Build strong relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Stay abreast of legislative changes and plan for future directives.
  • Focus on driving efficient, system-led administration.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Qualifications and experience
  • BCom degree in Occupational Health and Safety, or similar.
  • A minimum of 5 - 7 years proven experience in HSE at a senior level, preferably in an engineering and / or the marine environment.
  • Experience / involvement in Health and Safety systems implementation and a keen understanding of operational and customer, supplier processes and requirements.
Required skills
  • In-depth knowledge of Health and Safety regulations and best practices.
  • Supplier contract management.
  • Process and quality driven with a passion for safety, systems and efficiencies.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with teams.
  • Highly developed communication (oral and written), negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with global environmental, Health and Safety management, legislation, and standards.
  • Ability to travel regularly to conduct audits, inspections, and training.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Health and Safety software.
